It was facilitated by the Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export) with funding from the European Union as part of the implementation of the trade and private sector component of the Haiti-Dominican Republic Binational Cooperation Programme under the 11th European Development Fund (EDF).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/content.carib-export.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Deodat-Maharaj.png\" alt=\"Deodat Maharaj\" class=\"wp-image-253448\" width=\"227\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.carib-export.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Deodat-Maharaj.png 204w, https:\/\/content.carib-export.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Deodat-Maharaj-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/content.carib-export.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Deodat-Maharaj-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/content.carib-export.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Deodat-Maharaj-70x70.png 70w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 227px) 100vw, 227px\" \/><figcaption>Deodat Maharaj &#8211; Executive Director, <br>Caribbean Export<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Executive Director of Caribbean Export, Deodat Maharaj, underscored the programme\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s goals, stating: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It is designed not only to enhance trade between the two countries, but also to create an enabling business environment in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, so that they become more competitive internationally.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trade between the two countries in 2019 was estimated at <ins><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trademap.org\/Bilateral_TS.aspx?nvpm=1%7c214%7c%7c332%7c%7cTOTAL%7c%7c%7c2%7c1%7c1%7c2%7c2%7c1%7c1%7c1%7c%7c1\">US$ 820 million<\/a><\/ins>, and disparities between quality and conformity standards led to the duplication of efforts and spending on conformity assessments by companies to export and import products between the two countries that share the same land border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the heart of the Binational Programme are the value chains of cocoa\/chocolate, cosmetics\/essential oils and art &amp; craft, and therefore the new communication platform used by BHN and INDOCAL will focus on harmonizing and developing norms for products from these sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These sectors are very important to the economies of both countries. The production of Vetiver oil in Haiti, for example, creates jobs for over 60,000 producers. The cosmestic industry is also a growing sector in the Dominican Republic as exports of cosmetics increased by 30% during the 2013-2017 period.
