{"id":268299,"date":"2019-09-16T09:58:47","date_gmt":"2019-09-16T13:58:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/content.carib-export.com\/news\/safeguarding-the-caribbeans-cocoa-sector-from-frosty-pod\/"},"modified":"2022-06-13T21:46:31","modified_gmt":"2022-06-14T01:46:31","slug":"safeguarding-the-caribbeans-cocoa-sector-from-frosty-pod","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/content.carib-export.com\/es\/news\/safeguarding-the-caribbeans-cocoa-sector-from-frosty-pod\/","title":{"rendered":"Salvaguardar el sector cacaotero del Caribe de Frosty Pod"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/content.carib-export.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Frosty-pod.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-247930\" width=\"210\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.carib-export.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Frosty-pod.jpg 381w, https:\/\/content.carib-export.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Frosty-pod-230x300.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><figcaption><em>Frosty pod rot in Jamaica<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\n\nIn the fifteen countries of CARIFORUM including Haiti and the Dominican Republic, the highly sought after fine or flavor cocoa is produced.&nbsp; The Dominican Republic is the single largest producer of certified organic cocoa in the world causing the threat of frosty pod to have the potential to severely disrupt these lucrative international markets.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frosty pod rot is considered the most dangerous cacao disease caused by the fungus <em>Moniliophthora roreri.&nbsp; <\/em>Following its arrival to Jamaica in 2016<a href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a>, frosty pod now poses a tangible and enormous threat to the cocoa sector of the Caribbean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Costa Rica it took just five\nyears after the arrival of frosty pod for the country to lose 80% of it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s\nproduction of cocoa due to its severe damaging effect.&nbsp; This resulted in important changes to the way\nland was used, away from diversified cacao agroforestry systems to less diverse\ncropping systems.&nbsp; As a consequence\nfrosty pod can lead to serious negative socio-economic and ecological impacts\nfor any country that becomes infected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proximity of Jamaica to Cuba and the island\nof Hispaniola, consisting of\nthe <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dominican_Republic\">Dominican\nRepublic<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haiti\">Haiti<\/a>, and both legal and illegal movements of goods\nand people between these islands, present major avenues for the further spread\nof frosty pod. Cocoa farmers in Haiti and the Dominican Republic are poised to\nsuffer great losses unless action is undertaken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In preparation of the possible\narrival of frosty pod, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, with support from the\nCaribbean Export Development Agency and financial aid of the European Union<a href=\"#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a>,\nhave embarked on the development of a binational strategy for the prevention of\n<em>Moniliophthora roreri<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Two\ninternational experts, Dr. Wilbert Phillips and Dr. Martijn ten Hoopen, in\ncollaboration with public and private cocoa sector partners, including the\nMinistries of Agriculture of both countries have prepared a Binational Early\nWarning Scheme and an Emergency Protocol for the Prevention of Frosty Pod. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" src=\"https:\/\/content.carib-export.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Emergency-planning-team-300x217.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-247932\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.carib-export.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Emergency-planning-team-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/content.carib-export.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Emergency-planning-team.jpg 613w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption><em>The first ever frosty pod emergency plan field simulation excercise, held in the Dominican Republic, August 2019<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>A first ever binational simulation of the\narrival of frosty pod and the protocols and quarantine measures to put in place,\nwas held in the Dominican Republic in August 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Haiti and the Dominican\nRepublic are well aware of the risk of frosty pod and are acting to counteract\nthis threat.
