COVID-19\nhas been a pain for countless businesses worldwide, but for Chem Clean Limited\nthe current pandemic caused by the extremely contagious novel coronavirus has\nled to an increased demand for products and growth in exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nonetheless,\nRenee Zamore, Managing Director of the Trinidadian company, emphasized that any\nhelp given to Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) to gain entry into\nexport markets was not only welcomed but critical given the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n

With\ncountries combating COVID-19, and consumers stockpiling cleaning products,\ndisinfectants and hand sanitizers, the situation definitely presents an\nopportunity for Chem Clean and other regional suppliers to meet the demand that\nis key to mitigating the spread of this virus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\ncompany, which started as a backyard operation in 1981, is now one of the\nCaribbean\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s leading manufacturers of specialty cleaning and sanitizing\nchemicals. In fact, Chem Clean is popularly known for its consumer line which\nincludes Lime A-Way Bathroom Cleaner, Zesty Disinfectants and HandSanW hand\nsanitizers. They also offer a wide range of products for the laundry,\nhousekeeping, janitorial and industrial sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over\nthe years, Chem Clean Limited has been focused on producing quality products\nand expanding its customer base beyond its homeland, Trinidad and Tobago.  The company has been working assiduously to\nmeet this goal prior to COVID-19 and continues to do so now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chem\nClean\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s humble beginnings and its growth<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153This\nbusiness was started by my parents and another partner in 1981 when they saw an\nopportunity to utilise caustic soda to which they had easy access. It was\nreally a matter of seizing an opportunity and from a very small backyard\noperation, the business soon grew from strength to strength,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d the Managing\nDirector said.  Today, Chem Clean employs\n25 persons and has recognized brands under its belt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms.\nZamore recalled how Lime A-Way became the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s flagship product.  \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We manufactured for the international\ncompany, Ecolab Inc. for 12 years when import tariffs were very high and\nit made sense for Ecolab to have a local manufacturer for the region. When both\nparties dissolved the arrangement when heavy tariffs were lifted, we asked if\nwe could trademark Lime A-Way and continue to manufacture it for the local\nmarket, they agreed. We have continued to manufacture this well-known brand for\nsome 25 plus years now.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n\n\n

She\nexplained that while Trinidad and Tobago had been the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s primary\ncustomer base, over the last eight years Chem Clean has been steadily\nincreasing its exports within the region. \nHowever, she lamented that gaining entry into export markets was \u00e2\u20ac\u0153very\nchallenging\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and stressed that any assistance given \u00e2\u20ac\u0153goes a long way to\nreducing those barriers.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since\nthe onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, naturally the demand for key products has\nsignificantly increased both locally and regionally. Overall, Ms. Zamore revealed\nthat the company has seen an approximate increase of 10-15% in exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Direct Assistance Grant leads to increase\ncapacity and more sales<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Zamore disclosed that in 2012, Chem\nClean Limited successfully applied to the Caribbean Export Development Agency\nfor a Direct Assistance Grant and used it to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153properly and professionally\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\nimplement three projects in 2013.  The\ncompany:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Upgraded\nits Manufacturing Facility: <\/strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We had a new catwalk created for the\nmixing tank area, before this our catwalk was coming apart and would have soon\nbecome a health and safety risk.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/strong><\/li>
  2. Upgraded\nits Lab: <\/strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We outfitted our lab with cabinetry and\nlab equipment. Previously our lab was a makeshift table in the manufacturing\narea. With the upgrade, we are now able to carry out proper and professional\nresearch and development (R&D) and quality control checks.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/strong><\/li>
  3. Purchased\na new mould: <\/strong>A new 650ml bottle mould was purchased to\nenhance the marketability of Chem Clean\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s consumer products.  \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Our flagship product, Lime A-Way Bathroom\nCleaner, among other consumer products, got a well needed face lift and we were\nin a better position to compete on the international level. Sales of this\nproduct doubled after the new bottle,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said, adding that a new look was\nonce again needed.<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    The Direct Assistance Grant from\nCaribbean Export provided Chem Clean with the necessary support to upgrade its\nplant and boost capacity.  \u00e2\u20ac\u0153In 2012,\nexports represented less than 5% of our revenue, last year (2019) that figure\nwas up to 17%.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Meeting\nthe COVID-19 Demand<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n

    Now\nfaced with increased demand and having to implement measures to protect the\nworkplace against COVID-19, Chem Clean has made some changes to its operations.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s\nbeen extremely hectic manufacturing full-time to meet the demand. We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been\nreceiving requests from other countries, and our local customer base has grown,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\nMs. Zamore divulged.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Given\nthe infectious nature of COVID-19, employee safety was top priority at Chem\nClean.  The Managing Director did not\nwant staff to feel pressured or unsafe. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We had to make some decisions, gave\nthe staff options and ask them if they wanted to work first,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then\nseveral changes were implemented to beef up safety in at the manufacturing\ncompany.  Employees were equipped with\nface masks. Hand washing stations were set up and workspaces were spread out to\nmeet social distancing requirements. Public access to Chem Clean was also\nceased and temperature checks are conducted on persons doing pick-ups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Reiterating\nthat due to COVID-19 the company has benefited from an approximate 10-15%\nincrease in exports, Ms. Zamore acknowledged that the strategic decision taken\nin 2012 to upgrade the facility and boost production capacity was still bearing\nfruit today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     \u00e2\u20ac\u0153With the funding from the Direct Assistance\nGrant Scheme, we were able to implement those three projects that we would not\nhave otherwise been able to properly and professionally execute,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said,\nwhile emphasizing that agencies such as Caribbean Export provide essential\nsupport to SMEs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    She added that Chem Clean also ensures its staff and management benefit from training and workshops offered by ExportTT, the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Association (TTMA) and other organisations.\u00c2  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
