Anastasha Elliot , CEO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Anastasha Elliot traces her foray into\nentrepreneurship back to the age of eight, when she baked, then later crocheted,\ndesigned clothing and tie-dyed t-shirts and more, which she sold to earn money\nfor school and to help out at home.  Now,\nthe 36-year-old Kittitian is the CEO of Sugar Town Organics, a health and\nwellness company she founded with her mother after a cancer scare. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153My mom was diagnosed with cervical cancer\nand that forced us to take a look at our environment, our food source, what and\nhow we ate, how we were living both the emotional and mental aspects and the\nproducts we used on our skin and hair,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Anastasha shared.  \u00ab\u00a0She refused chemo and drugs, opting\ninstead for a holistic lifestyle.  She\nmade some radical changes to our lives, and four months later, she was\ncancer-free.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know it at the time, but that\nexperience set them on a path toward starting not one, but two successful\nbrands, both under the Sugar Town Organics umbrella.  Yaphene, a Hebrew word which means to shine\nbeautifully, is a natural cosmetics line utilising actives found in, and\nindigenous to the Caribbean.  Flauriel, a\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153mashup\u00e2\u20ac\u009d of Anastasha\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s grandparents\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and great grandparents\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 names, produces\nCaribbean-flavoured gourmet sauces, liqueurs, wines, Caribbean treats, blended\nherbal tea and jams. <\/p>\n\n\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Both brands focus heavily on health, and\non food, backed by the science,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Anastasha said.  \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I looked at how, in the Caribbean, we use\nfood to maintain our health, beauty and families and also to heal from disease.\nOur brands are therefore very food centric, and very Caribbean, of course with\ncultural influences that both affected the Caribbean and play a role in the\ngeographical origin of my family. My grand dad and his parents were not born in\nthe Caribbean you see.  It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a social\nform of cultural regeneration, this educational aspect that we have also taken\non\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Yaphene and Flauriel brands pay tribute\nto the Region, not only through the materials used, but also by how they are\nsourced.  Anastasha and her mum work with\n11 farmers in St. Kitts and also source raw materials including fresh and dried\nfoods from Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and\nTrinidad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently available at eight locations and\ncounting across St. Kitts and Nevis, the mother-daughter team are focused on\nincreasing Sugar Town\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s retail presence on the island and exporting throughthe\nCaribbean, and on empowering Kittitians to live healthier lives and create\ntheir own holistic recipes. <\/p>\n\n\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153In another five years we would love to\nhave our own outlet in town with a cosmetic lab where persons can come in and participate\nin classes, because we would like to be able to teach others to do basic things\nfor themselves while getting a little creative, and create more of an\nempowerment aspect to the brand,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Anastasha said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also shared that they are currently\nfocused on embarking on more meaningful export. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We did small-scale exporting for a while,\nand we have customers around the world who would order, and we would ship out\nto them, but since participating in WE-Xport, we have actually been able to\ntake the brand across the Atlantic to countries in Europe, Anastasha said.  And those exploits have gotten us quite a bit\nof exposure.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Women Empowered through Export\n(WE-Xport) program was designed by the Caribbean Export Development Agency to\nsupport Caribbean women in business to start exporting, or increase the exports\nof their products and services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With support from the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis and the WE-Xport programme, Anastasha will be promoting her lines at BMEX in June in Barbados and the Caribbean Festival of Arts<\/a> (CARIFESTA) in Trinidad from August 16- 25, 2019. And later this year she’ll be participating in the 4th CARIFORUM-EU Business Forum and Authentic Caribbean Expo<\/a> in Frankfurt, Germany pegged for September 26-28, 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has further\nthrown its support behind the local brand, enabling it to be featured at its\nfirst major trade shows in Paris and Dubai next summer.    <\/p>\n\n\n

To other young women who dream of embarking\non their own business venture, Anastasha shared some vital advice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be afraid to try. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be afraid to\nnot get it right,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said.  \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Surround\nyourself with likeminded people, people who will support what you are trying to\nachieve, who will push you, challenge you and who are willing to help. And\nalways be willing to ask for help, because the only real way to fail is not to\ntry.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
